Introducing the,

Northern Aboriginal Education Circle

Welcome to the Northern Aboriginal Education Circle web site, parents, educators and guardians. The NAEC is a member with Northwestern Ontario Education Leaders (NOEL) and various Aboriginal educators from across Northwestern Ontario now collectively known as the Northern Aboriginal Education Circle (NAEC). Our goal is to raise Aboriginal Student achievement in First Nations and Provincial Schools.

You are warmly welcomed to join us in our effort to help our children be successful in their endeavors. You may be aware our children, generally speaking graduate elementary and secondary level programs at a lower rate than mainstream students. Our children deserve the opportunity to quality education and we are inviting you to help us help them.

On October 18, 2002, the Northwestern Ontario Aboriginal Student Achievement Forum was held at the Valhalla Inn, Thunder Bay, Ontario. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and Ministry of Education and Training (MET) jointly funded this forum.

Approximately one hundred senior educators from First Nation and Provincial school boards discussed best practices in our schools. We also heard from First Nation educators from British Columbia, who told of their best practices and ideas of how to strengthen partnerships.

As a result of the forum, the Northern Aboriginal Education Steering Committee developed a work plan identifying four key goals with several tasks to ensure the goals materialize. The work plan and budget were presented to the minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Honourable Robert Nault, on January 13, 2003. On January 28, we learned we could begin our work for the children, the parents, the schools and all involved. Please review the work plan and think about how you may join our circle of educators. The Northern Aboriginal Education Circle work plan will help you understand what we hope to achieve.
